Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has published an update on the Carrickfergus Regeneration Project, a key part of the Belfast Region City Deal programme of investment, outlining how feedback from the public consultation held in September 2025 is informing the next stage of design development.
The drop-in consultation event, held at Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre in September, gave residents, businesses and visitors the opportunity to view the latest Stage 2 designs and share their views directly with the project team. Feedback was gathered through conversations, written comments and interactive displays throughout the evening.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said: “We’re delighted with the high response to the consultation which was very constructive, with strong support for the direction of the regeneration and recognition that this Belfast Region City Deal supported project represents a long-awaited opportunity to invest in Carrickfergus’s heritage, public spaces and town centre.
“In particular, feedback highlighted broad support for proposals to improve access to and interpretation of Carrickfergus Castle, light the historic town walls, and enhance public spaces around the harbour and town centre. Many respondents welcomed the ambition to better connect key heritage sites and create a more coherent visitor and resident experience.”
The public also raised important points that are now being actively considered by the design team. These included the need to ensure modern interventions respect the character of historic buildings, concerns around safety and anti-social behaviour in public spaces, and a desire for clear wayfinding and better pedestrian connections between the town, the Castle and the waterfront.
The project team is now using this feedback to refine designs as they move towards a Stage 3 design freeze, marking the end of the development phase, and the start of detailed design and construction. This includes further work on materials, lighting, public realm features and interpretation, as well as ensuring that accessibility, safety and heritage sensitivity remain central to decision-making.
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is currently planning the next stage of public consultation, which is expected to take place in April 2026. Details of the event, including timings and how the public can take part, will be shared once arrangements are confirmed.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, continued: “The feedback we received in September was thoughtful and helpful. The people of Carrickfergus clearly care deeply about the town and want to see regeneration done well. We are committed to listening and ensuring that community views continue to shape how the project moves forward.”
Martin Hare, Managing Director at McAdam Design, the lead consultant on the project, added: “This stage of the process is about refining and improving. The consultation helped us understand what people value most and where they want reassurance. That insight is now feeding directly into the next phase of design development.”
The £42.2 million Carrickfergus City Deal Regeneration Project aims to reposition the town as a heritage-led destination and the ‘Gateway to the Causeway Coastal Route’, while delivering real benefits for local communities through improved public spaces, facilities and connectivity. Of the £42.2 million, a substantial £26.4 million of this investment is being delivered through the Belfast Region City Deal, with the Department for Communities acting as the accountable department for the project.
